On a grey winter day BR Standard pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell has a green on the Section signal as we leave Loughborough with the 14.00 train to Leicester.
Cromwell was only 4 days from withdrawal for its 10 year overhaul but ran beautifully. Although kept spruced up for its last few days it had acquired an authentic "lived-in" patina.
In August 2023 the boiler is still at Tyseley being overhauled but the bottom end is complete. Covid has severely delayed the return but it is hoped to have 70013 back in steam by the end of 2023/early 2024.

We were considering turning in ready for the very early start but a night-time shot of BR Standard 4-6-2 70013 Oliver Cromwell in road 6 and LNER Gresley A4 4-6-2 60009 Union of South Africa in road 8 was too much to miss. West Coast Railways Class 47 47237 and Class 37 37518 were thrown in for good measure.
70013 would be departing from Victoria on the Cathedrals Express the next day while 60009 was being prepped for the Dorset Coast Express the day after.

It's all red lights for British Railways Standard 7 Pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell at the head of the returning Cheshireman railtour in platform 1 of Sheffield Midland station after a stirring journey through the Peak District via Edale.

British Railways Standard 4-6-2 70013 Oliver Cromwell at the head of its train at London Liverpool Street station awaits the off, destination Norwich.
This was the first time I had taken a train from Liverpool Street since the 1980s and I was shocked by the Birmingham New Street gloom of the country end of the platforms. I knew the station had been rebuilt but the remaining splendid trainshed beyond fooled me into thinking it had not been too badly butchered. Greater Anglia DVT electric 82133 on the left looks more at home in this sterile environment than a Britannia.
The wreath was carried in memory of Richard 'Dick' Hardy, a great railwayman, speaker, author and well-respected man who died the previous Sunday at the age of 93.

British Railways Standard Pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell comes off its train in platform 1 to take water passing immaculate Class 47 diesel 1705 in the Up Through.
Due to the fire risk the three day trains; 11.00, 13.00 & 14.00, had been top and tailed with Class 33 diesel D6355. However we relieved the day crew and worked the 19.30 diner on our own - very carefully!

The Beast from the East(ern Region)!
Before we left for Southall shed British Railways Standard 4-6-2 70013 Oliver Cromwell had to endure a blizzard in the siding at Norwich Thorpe. In fact we were off 90 mins late because that DB Schenker freight train on the left was blocking us in. Despite that we arrived on Southall shed only 60 minutes late. The weather hardly effected us except to make us bleeding cold of course!

Carnforth shed, Lancashire. British Railways Britannia Class 4-6-2 70013 Oliver Cromwell & an unidentified Stanier Black 5 in light steam at the north end of the shed blacken the late afternoon atmosphere as they await their next duties. I visited the shed in the evening en route back to Manchester Victoria on a Northern Railfans trip.
The tall concrete building is the ash lift, an efficient way to clear away the piles of ash & char from engine disposals which could quickly accumulate in a large shed like Carnforth. Small tubs were filled by hand and then hoist up the tower & tipped into waiting 16 ton wagons for onward disposal. The much larger concrete coaling tower is just out of shot.
70013 has now (May 2008) been restored at the Great Central Railway at Loughborough after spending most of the time since August 1968 at Bressingham in Norfolk. The plan is to run-in the loco on the Great Central ready for main line train duty in 2008 to commemorate 40 years since the end of steam on BR.
