Say what you will about "Polar Express" trains you can't deny that they really bring in the punters as the hordes on the platform at Kingsley & Froghall station in Staffordshire yesterday prove. Lots of happy pyjama-ed kids. I don't know what cut the franchise takes but the Churnet Valley Railway must be minting it over the Christmas period with all trains fully booked. USATC S160 2-8-0 5197 was heading the train with an unidentified Class 20 diesel on the tail. As this is the southern terminus of the CVR the configuration was reversed when they set off back towards Leek.

A post-Christmas walk in the Peak District took us to Hulme End and the disused trackbed of the narrow gauge Leek & Manifold Railway. Instead of the expected fog & mist we got brilliant sunshine. The L&MVLR was converted into a footpath and road in 1937 a few years after the closure of the railway. HFF to everyone & have a great weekend.

The fireman is giving up the one from Hampton Loade while the signalman is handing over the staff to the next crossing point at Arley to the south. A grey day made brighter by the platform floral display at Wansford station. The old station building on platform three was built by the Northampton and Peterborough Railway in 1844/5 for the opening of the line in a Jacobean style with ornate stone masonry. It was finally purchased by the Nene Valley Railway in 2015 but still needs a lot of work. 1958-vintage Swedish Railcar Y7 No 1212 in original orange and yellow livery looks a bit out of place but the line has built up quite a collection of continental rolling stock

Heading east GB RailFreight Class 60 diesel 60056 with 6E36 the 01.45 Liverpool Tuebrook Sidings to Drax biomass train has just passed Heaton Lodge Junction north of Huddersfield on the ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Calder Valley line at 06.54. The shot was taken from the footbridge over the ex-LNWR New Line which now joins the Calder Valley line at Heaton Lodge East Junction off left. The footpath continues under the LYR line in a very low tunnel and up the hill past the stone building. HFF & have a great weekend.

If they were still interested, this is the very pleasant view that commuters would have as they made their weary way home from the Holmes Road entrance of the ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Sowerby Bridge station. The apartment block in the middle distance stands on the banks of the River Calder with Christ Church on the hillside beyond. HFF and have a great weekend.
