Is this Brown-eyed Susan, Rudbeckia triloba or is it Common Sneezeweed? - the leaves and petals from which were used to make snuff.

The craggy peaks of Carboniferous Limestone near Earl Sterndale south of Buxton are associated with apron reef facies developed on the south-western flanks of the Derbyshire shelf in Dinantian times. The distant hills are made up of younger Namurian sandstones and shales. Very much younger is the barbed wire fence! HFF everyone. Have a great weekend.

The end of the Line! And what a line it used to be! The Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway, later MSLR/GCR/LNER/BR, Woodhead Route opened through Hadfield in 1845 and was a major trans-Pennine transport link for nearly 140 years. Approved by the LNER pre-war the line was finally electrified by BR at 1500 vDC in 1955. It was the most modern railway in Britain at the time but was unfortunately the only main line using 1.5 kVDC and this system was soon superseded by the later network standard of 25 kV AC. When the infrastructure needed upgrading the decision was made to close the line instead and all traffic between Hadfield and Penistone ceased in 1981. The Manchester commuter lines were eventually upgraded to 25 kV AC and trains still run to Hadfield & Glossop via Dinting Junction. Interestingly the original 70-year old overhead structures have been reused...

The National Trust house and gardens at Calke Abbey near Derby in the warm late afternoon light. Calke Abbey stands on the site of a medieval religious house dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538. After passing through several hands, Richard Wendsley acquired Calke, eventually selling the estate in 1585 to Robert Bainbridge. His son sold the estate to Henry Harpur in 1622 for £5,350. It stayed in the Harpur family until the National Trust began caring for it in 1985. HFF everybody & have a great weekend.

Calke Abbey was owned by the Harpur family for nearly 300 years until it was passed to the National Trust in 1985 in lieu of death duties. Today, the house is open to the public and many of its rooms are deliberately displayed in the state of decline in which the house was acquired. HFF and have a peaceful weekend.

No prizes for guessing that this was taken in Chesterfield. The distinctive twisted spire on the Church of St Mary and All Saints was added in about 1362.
