The river Soar is in full spate and the Meadows are doing what they are for: containing the water. The river from here is actually canalised and forms the Leicester branch of the Grand Union Canal.

When this bench was first installed on the Great Central Way - a former railway converted into a foot/cycle path - you could sit here and get a lovely view of the Meadows & King's Lock on the canal. Today it's long grass and tall metal fencing!

A duck with her 11 offspring paddling down the canal in Aylestone.
It wasn't easy getting them all in because they were darting all over the place. Fortunately mother decided to move on so the ducklings rushed after her.

Autumn at Parson's Bridge over the canalised River Soar in Aylestone. It looks lost in the countryside but in fact is well within the city of Leicester. This was not always the case and when the canal was built in the late 18th century Aylestone was a small village 3 miles from Leicester.

An evening walk through old Aylestone. The view from the 13th century St Andrew's churchyard of the farmhouse on Old Church Road which is dated 1723.
Aylestone was a village 3 miles south of the city from Saxon times until 1891 when it was incorporated into the Borough, now city, of Leicester.
