On the Sunday evening of the 15th Dresden Steam Engine Festival we rode the 16.29 steam-hauled special from Dresden to Freiberg double-headed by DR Class 50 2-10-0 50 3648-8 and Class 23-10 2-6-2 35 1097-1. I have only just noticed the two firemen taking photos of each other from the cab windows! HFF to everyone. Have a great weekend.

We rode on the 16.29 Dresden Hauptbahnhof to Freiberg via Tharandt Steam Festival special which was double-headed by Class 50 2-10-0 3648-8 and Class 23-10 2-6-2 35 1097-1. Here we are departing from platform 1 under Dresden station's splendid overall roof. The locos are just visible at the head of our train! A fair crowd turned out to watch and film us leave. It's not often that I get asked to explain my pics but I was asked a fair question about why this image should fit into the Naturally Occurring Collages Group. This deserves a fair answer. One defintion of a collage is art that results from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. On the face of it my image is of a railway station and it was taken as such. On another level the superimposed verticals, diagonals and curves of the silhouetted steelwork create an intriguing pattern. The shadowy figures "pasted' into the scene add to the effect of a collage of different shapes and angles. That was how my mind was working when I uploaded this shot - a found collage - although not necessarily when I took the picture. Perhaps an element of blur or vignetting might have taken it out of the realm of just a railway scene.

This attractive glass & metal covered staircase, dating from the 1909 rebuilding leads down from the island platform at Tharandt railway station to the subway & exit. I am reminded of the similar covered staircase at Quedlingburg station in the Harz.

On the Sunday morning of the 15th Dresden Steam Engine Festival two steam-hauled specials from Dresden to Freiberg ran in parallel from Tharandt southwest of Dresden. On the left is DR Class 41 2-8-2 41 1144-9 on the 09.29 passenger from Dresden Hauptbahnhof, running one hour late. On the right is Class 52 2-10-0 52 8154-8 on a goods train. This section is the beginning of the 1 in 40 climb to the south & both locos were working flat out.
