After a boat trip on Alqueva reservoir we visited the beautiful town of Monsaraz . The lake can be seen on the far right & is the largest in Europe apparently. Off shot to the left it forms the border between Spain & Portugal in this region. The proximity of the border explains the reason for the presence of this fortress town. HWW to everyone.

The beautiful little station at Vale do Peso station is on the closed Cáceres branch line from Torre das Vargens to Castelo de Vide, opened in 1880, which used to run over the Marvão-Beirã border into Spain. It is covered in exquisite blue & white tiled scenes of the region which fortunately have not been vandalised. The regional trains service on the Cáceres branch line ended on February 1, 2011. The station is frozen in time with everything still in place; track, signals, points, goods shed, loading gauge, water tank and clearly hasn't been disused for too long. The photo was taken from the "new" goods loading yard which according to the stone plaque was inaugurated by the "Camara Municipal do Crato" on 7th May 1993. I guess the optimism of the 1990s was misplaced and the crisis of 2008 badly hit the region. I would like to believe it will open again someday.

The Garden of San Pedro de Alcantara is a fine place to sit & watch the world go by, read a book or just admire the view over the old city & castle. HBM to everyone. Enjoy your week.

We took the broad gauge "historic train" of 5 wooden-bodied coaches from Regua. It was headed by CP Class 1400 Bo-Bo English Electric/ SRFM diesel-electric CP 1424. A small band played local folk music on the train and on the platform here in Tua. HBM to everyone.

Dating from 1886 the Dom Luís I Bridge is a double-deck metal arch bridge that spans the River Douro between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Line D trams of the Metro run over the upper bridge while the lower carries road traffic. This view was taken from the Vila Nova de Gaia riverside which is famous for its port wine cellars. Now part of a tourist display these sailing boats were once used to transport the wine from the Douro Valley to Vila Nova de Gaia for storage and export. HFF & a great weekend to everyone.

Light & shadow on the footplate of narrow gauge steam locomotive Mallet 2-4-6-0 E18 built by Henschel in 1923. Now preserved.

It's a good job that traffic light is showing red! A two car Aveiro to Sernada do Vouga diesel railcar takes priority over the car on the Rio Vouga road/railway bridge just to the south of Sernada station. The way it should be! HFF everyone. Have a safe weekend.

North of Porto in the Minho we stayed in a 18th century farmhouse and vineyard. This is the beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.

The eastern end of Sao Miguel island as we were flying into Ponta Delgado from Lisbon. A beautiful green island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
