Ashford Castle Hotel near the village of Cong is an impressive building but so are the grounds seen here at sunset.
We spent a few days there for my wife's birthday back in 2010. A cold and snowy few days but the sun shone.
Founded in 1228 by the Anglo-Norman De Burgo and then captured by the English Lord Bingham in 1589 it was bought by the Guiness family in 1852. It has been rebuilt and extended many times. It became a hotel in 1939 and was doubled in size in 1970. Not cheap but a great place to stay.
HFF to everyone. Have a great weekend.

Only 53 years ago, driving back from Skye on the A82 we visited Urquhart castle by Loch Ness en route to Inverness.
The present ruins date from the 13th to the 16th centuries, though built on the site of an early medieval fortification.
HBM to everyone. Have a great week.

We visited Kenilworth Castle about an hours drive from Leicester yesterday. It was well worth it. The castle is a very atmospheric set of ruins today but in the Middle Ages up to the mid-17th century it was a very important & impressive palace. The Civil War was its undoing and although it was never attacked the keep was slighted on the orders of Parliament to stop it being used in future.
HBM everyone. Enjoy the new week.

I hitch-hiked north on the A1 from Doncaster to Scotland ending up in Edinburgh and then walked up to the castle. This is the view looking west from Edinburgh Castle.
The prominent spires of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral stand out in the mist. Just to not disappoint any railway enthusiasts in my audience I should also point out that the multi-storied building between castle and cathedral is the Lothian Road side of the Caledonian Hotel opened in 1903 by the the Caledonian Railway whose Princes Street station was entered via the hotel's grand arches until its closure in 1965.

We have seen the building on the skyline & driven past the brown signs on the M1 many times but finally we turned off and visited Bolsover Castle . It was well worth it for the views alone.
Built in the early 17th century, the present castle lies on the earthworks and ruins of the 12th-century medieval castle; the first structure of the present castle was built between 1612 and 1617 by Sir Charles Cavendish. The site is now in the care of the English Heritage charity and open to the public.
HFF & have a great weekend.
