DB electric 185 198-9 on a tank train heading north towards Koblenz passes the ruins of Ehrenfels Castle and the vineyards on the east bank of the Rhine.
Together with the Mäuseturm and the Klopp Castle it formed a northward barrier from the 13th Century, in order to protect the territory of the archbishopric of Mainz. The castle, which was used in times of war as a hiding place for the cathedral treasury of Aachen, was extensively destroyed in 1689.

Firing BR Standard 5 4-6-0 73082, visiting from the Bluebell during the winter gala. We had about 25 minutes to wait before departing with the 11.40 freight to Swithland which gave me plenty of time to make a brew in the porter's room and then prep the fire. This view offered itself on the way back.
Despite there only being one person in this view the station was actually rammed with photographers and passengers.

A timeless winter scene at Loughborough Central 27 years ago as a freight train hauled by LMS 4F 0-6-0 44422 disappears southwards.

Dwarfed by the Rocky Mountains a Canadian Pacific freight train heading by 4 unidentified locos - probably EMD SD40s - passes Kananaskis heading east towards Calgary.
I was attending a Mobil Oil Tectonic Geology course through the mountains and should have been listening to the description of the rock outcrops here but the chance of a photo of a train in this fabulous landscape was too much of a diversion.
Mount Yamnuska, right, & Old Goat Peak, centre, are part of the Rocky Mountain Front Range and the abrupt change between the steeply dipping, folded & thrusted rocks in the west and the flat lying Interior Plains rocks to the east is dramatic. Here Middle Cambrian carbonates have overridden Cretaceous Belly River Formation along the McConnell thrust fault.
(I may not have been listening but I still have the field notes!)

Woodley station on the former Great Central & Midland Joint line from Guide Bridge to Marple still retains its fine lattice iron footbridge.
Passing beneath the bridge is Freightliner Class 66 diesel 66613 heading south with 6H43, the 08.04 Pendleton (Brindle Heath) to Tunstead Sidings, Derbyshire.
HFF and a good w/e to everyone. Keep safe.

It was 7am with the dawn breaking and Freightliner Class 66/6 diesel 66615 had slowly run along Leicester station's platform 2. As I caught up with the engine it was signalled into the Humberstone Road loop beyond the station & rapidly pulled away northwards.

Bangor railway Station, North Wales. Diesel Class 24 5039 on a west-bound sheeted freight waits on the signal while 5030 shunts a parcels train past the London & North Western Railway signal box at Whit 1973. The semaphore signals are still active but the platform-end water tank had just been felled. The remains can be seen to the left of the railwayman.
Bangor station is located between two tunnels, the one seen here takes the line westwards towards Holyhead.

Burnley Rose Grove, Lancashire outside the steam shed. Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48348 is on a coal train heading west, 1st August 1968.
Note the gaggle of enthusiasts on the cutting side in the background enjoying the view before the final end of steam on BR 3 days later when Rose Grove shed (one of the last 3 steam depots - out of sight to the right) closed.
Rosebay willowherb is forever associated with August 1968 in my mind and its alternative name of fireweed is very appropriate.

GCR/LNER O4 63601 departs Loughborough station on a "Windcutter" minerals train Photo Charter - I worked the morning firing turn on the same charter & after handing over to the relief crew took the opportunity to take some photos myself.
This is a faithful reproduction of the train & the engine that would have passed through my home town, Thorne in South Yorkshire, when I was a child. 63601 was allocated to Frodingham shed in Scunthorpe in the 50s & early 60s and pulled endless coal trains on the GCR line between Doncaster & Scunthorpe
The engine belongs to the National Railway Museum & is on loan to the Great Central Railway, the only survivor in the UK of hundreds built before & during the First World War..
