Down the branch. We are on Hunslet 0-6-0ST Austerity 18 as the shuttle is drawn back to Rothley from the terminus at Mountsorrel by Class 20 diesel D8001. Not a lot of work for me on this leg! Beyond the bridge & buffer stops is Mountsorrel roadstone quarry.

Great Western Railway pannier tank 0-6-0PT 7714 with Chris at the controls sets off from Rothley on the 16.45 ex-Loughborough. I'm not sure what the car on the right is but it's a real classic.

Great Western Railway 57xx pannier tank 0-6-0PT 4612 climbs the final 100 metres into Bodmin General station arriving from Boscarne Junction. The combination of steep gradient and tight curve brought the loco down to walking pace as she was blasting her way up.

The huge mountain of scrap at Cashmore's scrap yard on East Dock Road in Newport dwarfs British Railways 3MT 2-6-2 tank 82031 waiting its turn to die. Bundles of boiler tubes are neatly stacked but the cylinders & steam chests from unknown engines litter the pile behind. This was my only visit to Cashmores and all the steam had gone by year's end. A twist in the tale is that, although all of this class of locomotive were scrapped, today a group of enthusiasts are actually building a replica of a Class 3MT tank from scratch. 82045 is progressing well - see www.82045.org.uk/news/82045_news-may15.html

Just a bit of smoke as LMS Fowler 0-6-0T 47406 climbs out of Leicester North. I cracked the fire hole door moments later to cut the clag.
