Mount Sibayak is a fairly dormant volcano near Berastagi south of Medan. It is more than 100 years since it last erupted - very recently in geological time - but the Barisan Mountains are definitely still active. Mt Sinabung a few kilometres from here did erupt in 2010.

We were staying in the Mobil guesthouse in Puncak in the mountains south of Jakarta. This was the view looking west towards Mount Pangrango (3,019 m/ 9,905 ft) a dormant volcanic peak, one of many on the Sunda Arc.

It's the sheer scale of it really but if steam engines still ran on the metre gauge Alicante - Dénia Line there is no doubt that they would be working so hard that the exhaust would make a train passing through the Garganta de Gata gorge much more obvious!
The gorge cuts through a line of mountains made up of Cretaceous limestone which is very actively being quarried. Sadly all the crushed rock is transported out by road.
A FGV Stadler dual-traction tram-train is seen about to enter the third tunnel in this section on its way to Dénia. The line opened in 1911 and has been upgraded over the last decade reopening throughout in 2023. The Mediterranean Sea and the mountains behind Valencia city are just visible in the far distance.
The fence is in there. It may take some finding but so does the train-tram!!
HFF to everyone. Enjoy the weekend.

After an overnight flight from Gatwick we were flying an early morning connection from Islamabad/Rawalpindi to Peking (as it was called back in 1983) on Pakistan Airlines when the captain pointed out that we were about to pass over the 2nd highest mountain in the world, K2 at 8,611 metres (28,251 ft). The camera was quickly retrieved from the overhead locker.
K2 is part of the Karakoram Range, and is located on the border between Xinjiang, China, and Gilgit, in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The engine nacelle on the left is on our PIA Boeing 707.

"The Sky is the Limit"
On the 29th floor of the Hotel Suitopia the views from the Skybar are terrific. This is looking westwards. The notch in the mountain is the Cañón del Mascarat through which the road and rail thread between Calpe & Altea. The mountain seen beyond is one of the 1000m+ peaks of the Aitana range above Benidorm.

Today Guadalest is a tourist town in the mountains north of Benidorm but the medieval castle on a ridge overshadowing the Guadalest valley was originally built in the 11th century, during the Muslim rule over the Iberian Peninsula.

We climbed Mount Sibayak a fairly dormant volcano near Berastagi south of Medan. It is more than 100 years since it last erupted - very recently in geological time - but the Barisan Mountains are definitely still active. Mt Sinabung a few kilometres from here did erupt in 2010. Steam from the fumeroles can be seen on the mountain.
The walk starts in these rice padi fields but climbs quite steeply through forest and then onto open rock. The crest is at 2,212 m (7,257 ft) and in the clouds it gets chilly when you're wearing shorts!.

The End of Steam on British Railways. A few days before the end at Copy Pit signal box , between Burnley and Todmorden.
LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48519 had just banked a diesel hauled freight westwards from Todmorden. There is only one Brownie b/w photo of its progress because my 35mm film had run out. This shot is taken at the summit of the climb after the freight had dropped away down to Burnley off to the right. The mountainous nature of this part of the Pennines is obvious in the background.
I had taken a day off from working in the labour pool at Lysaughts steelworks in Scunthorpe, borrowed my dad's car & drove for hours from South Yorkshire over the Pennines - no M62 in those days - & caught this banker before visiting Rose grove and Lostock Hall sheds.
A reboot of an early posting to celebrate Happy Fence Friday while we can't upload any new images! Have a great weekend and stay safe.
