Edinburgh Castle Scotland September 1972

I hitch-hiked north on the A1 from Doncaster to Scotland ending up in Edinburgh and then walked up to the castle. This is the view looking west from Edinburgh Castle. The prominent spires of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral stand out in the mist. Just to not disappoint any railway enthusiasts in my audience I should also point out that the multi-storied building between castle and cathedral is the Lothian Road side of the Caledonian Hotel opened in 1903 by the the Caledonian Railway whose Princes Street station was entered via the hotel's grand arches until its closure in 1965.

Chartres Eure-et-Loir France 14th October 2022

The splendid cathedral in Chartres dominates the city and is particularly impressive lit up at night. It was a 10 minute walk from our hotel but this view was taken from the hotel room window. Built between 1194 & 1260 it must have astounded the people of the time even more than it amazes us today. Part of the old town, including most of the library associated with the School of Chartres, was destroyed by Allied bombs in 1944 but the cathedral survived.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is situated on top the former Aztec sacred precinct near the Templo Mayor on the northern side of the Plaza de la Constitución. It was built in sections from 1573 to 1813 around the original church that was constructed soon after the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan. It's not your eyes, the building was structurally unstable because much of Mexico City is built upon the dried lakebed of Lake Texcoco. Restoration work beginning in the 1990s stabilized the cathedral and it was removed from the endangered list in 2000

2) Verdun France 2019

Only 50 years later! No steam engines or snow this time. Verdun is overshadowed by the terrible slaughter of the First World War battle but today it is a very pleasant small city. This view over the river Meuse and the Notre-Dame cathedral was taken from our hotel room window at the Jardins du Mess. Before our stay I had wondered about the hotel name and in what condition we would find it.... In fact the Mess refers to the officer’s mess, the role that this building played in WWI.

Well the rain certainly stopped today! Perfect blue skies and a visit to the roof of the Duomo allowed this view of the snow-capped Alpine mountains.
