Strangers on the Shore.

En route to Indonesia from the US we were going to take the train from Sydney to Perth but the railwaymen went on strike. We took the plane instead & so we had 3 more days in Western Australia. We rented a car and drove out of the city. This beautiful deserted beach on the Indian Ocean was just off the road north of Perth I think. Anyone recognise it?

You can't get much closer to the beach! This fine looking Cornish house is built on the headland on the south side of Constantine Bay and has its back to the prevailing southwest wind.

Sunset on the beach at the Sol Beach Bar in Scheveningen. It's 10.30 and the light is beautiful. This was the only photo I took during the recent Clyde Netherlands reunion - I was too busy catching up with former colleagues many of whom I hadn't seen for over 20 years. I worked in the oil industry back then and Clyde had North Sea hydrocarbon production offshore from Scheveningen. It is still producing but clearly the mass of windmills on the horizon is proof that greener power generation is taking over.

Everyone waves at a steam train. On the classic seaside stretch of railway near Dawlish the crowds are happy to see Great Western Railway King 4-6-0 6024 King Edward II double-heading with British Railways Standard Pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell with the Poole to Plymouth Devonian railtour. The sea was pounding the sea wall and spraying the track & train as we passed. Note the red sandstone cliffs, of Devonian age, which make this area so attractive. Best appreciated large.

A telephoto shot looking from Cap Gris-Nez across Wissant Bay northwards to Cap Blanc-Nez. Gris-Nez is the closest point in France to England. Blanc-Nez is an Upper Cretaceous Chalk outcrop (white). Note the piles of chalk on the beach to the left - evidence of the instability in the cliffs

The sea birds vie for space with the kite fliers on the beach. Looking across the wetlands of the Somme estuary to the town of Le Crotoy on the Channel coast. This was taken from the window of the train to St Valery-sur-Somme on the Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme. In 1674, under the terms of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, the castle of Crotoy, dating from 1340, was destroyed so I'm not sure what that Disney-ish castellated building is.

The beautiful little fishing village and harbour of Polperro on the south coast of Cornwall was once a smugglers paradise. HFF & have a great weekend.
