HBM Freeman's Common Leicester 3rd September 2024

06 Sep 2024 12 12 143
The Victorian cattle market was located at Freeman's Common until 1990 & this Grade II listed building, now the Counting House pub, was the market refreshment rooms. The redevelopment of the area into a retail park & cinema complex took place in the mid-90s and involved a new road lay-out with multiple traffic lights and one-way systems. The clock tower is a fine feature & would have been important to know the time when it was a market but sadly today the clock is not functioning. HBM to everyone. Enjoy the day.

El Partal an early 14th-century Moorish palace. Dating back to the 13th century the fortress and palace of the Alhambra is a fabulous mix of islamic and christian architecture. After years of neglect and attempts to destroy it by napoleonic troops the complex has been restored & is Spain's most visited site. HBM to everyone. Enjoy the start of the new week.

HFF New Walk Leicester 17th April 2020

24 Aug 2023 22 22 205
Back in mid-Covid times we took a stroll down New Walk in Leicester. Opened in 1785 the traffic-free street follows the trace of the old Roman Via Devana, the Colchester to Chester road through Roman Leicester (Ratae Corieltauvorum). This fine listed Georgian terrace with wrought iron fencing and balconies has always been a favourite. HFF to everyone & have a great weekend.

Not far from Halifax Minster, architecture of a different nature. The complex Victorian steelwork of the 1855 ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway station roof is seen from the top of the stairs down to platforms 1 & 2.

Waterfall Staffordshire 30th May 2021

03 Jun 2021 21 16 301
Last weekend we did a 7 mile Bank Holiday walk around the Manifold Valley & passed New Hall in the village of Waterfall as we climbed up out of the Hamps valley. This was a short detour off our planned route to have a beer at the Red Lion in the village. From "Staffordshire Past Track": The village of Waterfall is situated in the Staffordshire Moorlands, north-west of the town of Ashbourne. It is a very typical Moorland village with its buildings built of stone. The place name is a descriptive one and comes from the fact that the River Hamps falls into a subterranean watercourse between the village of Waterfall and Winkhill. HHF from the Peak District and have a great weekend.

The warm evening light makes the warm Yorkshire grit of the Gatehouse on Low Hills Lane, Lindley even warmer! Designed by Edgar Wood and built in 1900 as coachman’s accommodation this unusual building marked the entrance to the Fieldhead estate which is now completely built over. HFF & have a great weekend!

Tuam County Galway Ireland 21st April 2016

The beautiful cast iron spandrels of the columns supporting Tuam station's platform roofing also support a blackbird. The station was originally opened in 1860 as part of the Waterford, Limerick and Western Railway (later Great Southern & Western Railway) route between Limerick and Sligo. It was closed, along with the whole route, in 1976 during Córas Iompair Éireann's rationalisation of the rail network.

The beautiful curves of the Art Nouveau iron and glass canopy and Arles stone sculptures of the Gare de Nice-Ville which was opened in 1867 by the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée company (PLM). The canopy is very similar in style to that at the same company's Lyon Gare des Brotteaux.
