Two signs. One bridge. Broad Street Tunnel or Black Sabbath Bridge? The rock group are from Birmingham & this bridge which spans the canal on Broad Street in Birmingham city centre has been renamed in their honour. In fact the four shapes on the bench are silhouettes of the band members! The fence conveniently stops passing Brummies from falling "Into the Void"... HFF to everyone and have a great weekend.

Great Central Railway Loughborough Leicestershire…

During prep of Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48305 I helped Bill to oil the underkeeps by operating the pump from ground level while he was in the pit. In the brief interlude while he was removing the corks and draining any water I took this shot of the 8F's driving wheel, rods and motion. Preserved locos, particularly freight engines like the 8F, may be much more polished and clean than they ever were in BR days but close up they are still working engines.

Fishermen still work on Inle lake & not just posing for the tourists. This chap is demonstrating the one-legged paddle action they adopt to move along leaving their hands free to cast the fishing net. All the while balancing on the end of that boat. Best seen large. Click Z.

The Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad terminus in Chicago was rebuilt in 1984 as the Ogilvie Transportation Center but this view shows the original station in all its gloom. 1953 built C&NW EMD E8 diesel 521 waits departure northwards. These fine engines have since been withdrawn.

Light & shadows on the Waterfront at Ipswich docks. The cast iron columns are original but the rest of the building is new. At one time the dock railway ran along the quayside here. A bit late but HFF! HAGWE anyway!

Great Oxendon Northamptonshire 7th August 2020

11 Nov 2020 11 4 226
The Great Oxendon tunnel (414m) on the closed ex-LNWR Northampton to Market Harborough railway line. This is beneath the ventilation shaft half way through the tunnel. The line was opened in 1859 by the LNWR and closed to passenger services in 1960 although sleeper services from St Pancras passed this way until 1973 and freight until full closure in 1981. Today the Brampton Valley Way foot/cyclepath passes through one of the 2 single line bores.

Alexanderplatz East Berlin Germany 18th August 19…

12 Nov 2020 26 18 306
This is not just a shot of random railings in Alexanderplatz, Berlin but my "other" railway photograph taken in Germany in 1972 - I only took two in the three months I was there! Times have changed... My railway interest was at a low ebb & I couldn't even be bothered to walk over to the station to get a decent shot of the Pacifics still steam-hauling trains in the eastern zone although I probably thought I might get arrested if I did. I contented myself with a snatched shot of a train arriving. Lots of interesting cars in the parking though! HFF and keep safe in this second wave of Covid.

Preston Station Lancashire 9th June 1968

11 Jul 2020 8 5 277
Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 44971 taking water at the platform end of Preston station early on a Sunday morning near the end of BR steam. Myself & a friend had arrived at Preston station at approx. 05.00 in the morning after trying & failing to sleep on the footplate of a Black 5 at Lostock Hall shed, on a park bench in Leyland & at the cop shop in Leyland. We didn't really sleep in the waiting room at Preston either because this engine was pottering about. Later that morning we took the train to Carnforth to check out the shed before returning to Sheffield in the evening. An everyday scene about to disappear for ever.

Great Central Railway Aylestone Leicester 29th Mar…

30 Mar 2020 10 8 327
Light and shadow in Leicester. Now definitely out of gauge, Berne or BR, the abandoned Great Central Railway London Extension through Aylestone in south Leicester is crossed by Soar Valley Way, the outer ring road. The GCR closed as a through route in September 1966 and the Rugby-Nottingham section completely in May 1969. It is now the Great Central Way a foot and cycle path which the for-once enlightened Leicester City Council opened in the early 1980s.
