Dourie is a trade mark of P and M Hurll, Gartliston Brickworks, Glenboig and was used for firebricks made with a mixture of poorer quality Ayrshire clay and local fire clay to provide a cheaper product for less demanding applications.

Milton, Carluke

Milton Brick & Tile Works, Carluke, Lanarkshire, operated from c1897 to 1978. Scottish Clay Hollow-Ware Limited were incorporated on 15th July 1937 with registered office at the works. Final closure came with the voluntary liquidation of T B Gibson & Co Ltd t/a Milton Tile Works, Carluke on 14th August 1978.

Partners Charles McDonald and William Barr dissolved partnership 30th April 1910. It was also known as the Nellfield Brick & Tile Works.

Cleghorn Terracotta Co Ld, Glasgow

The works of the Cleghorn Terra-Cotta Ltd was situated alongside the Caledonian Railway just north-west of Cleghorn in Lanarkshire. It was connected to a claypit some distance away by a tramway. High quality red facing bricks were produced and used on many prominent buildings and structures in Scotland. These included the Rispen Cleuch Viaduct on the Wanlockhead Light Railway, and the Bonded warehouses, Seagate, Dundee. Established c1895 the company was wound up in 1918 when the following notice was posted in the EDINBURGH GAZETTE, OCTOBER 22, 1918. THE CLEGHORN TERRA-COTTA COMPANY LIMITED. AT an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Members of the above Company, duly convened, and held at 45 Hope Street, Glasgow, on the 25th day of September 1918, the following Special Resolutions were duly .passed ; and at a subsequent Extraordinary General Meeting .of the above Company, also duly convened, and held at the same place on the 16th day of October 1918, the following Special Resolutions were duly confirmed :;— 1. "That The Cleghorn Terra-Cotta Company Limited be wound up voluntarily," and 2. This brickworks was situated at Auchinlee Farm in Bellside just north of Coltness in Lanarkshire. It appears to have been well established by the late 1890s and to have disappeared by 1920.

Hurlford

J&R Howie Ltd., Hurlford Fireclay Works, Kilmarnock. The works was just to the east of Kilmarnock and supplied by a number of mines in the area. It operated from 1858 until 1971 producing pottery, bricks, chimneys, garden ornaments and enamelled sanitary ware. The buildings were demolished by 1979.

Alex Frew & Co operated two brickworks to the east of Airdrie in Lanarkshire. Rawyards Brick Works commenced working in the late 19th century, whilst the Drumbathie Brickworks to the south of Rawyards was in production from the early 20th century. Production at this latter works ceased c1960.

There were two brickworks in Carfin and I believe that this is a product of the one operated by Andrew Jeffrey's Carfin Coal Co, Carfin, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, between c1859 and c1939. The other was William Dixon's Jenny Lind brickworks .

Auchlochan

Auchlochan collieries at Coalburn were part of the Wm Dixon Ltd empire. It appears that the brickworks had either closed or been sold by 1947 as it was not passed to the NCB.
