Llandudno Station

29 Jun 2024 5 2 190
Amidst a forest of lamps, Transport for Wales class 197 018 departs Llandudno for Llandudno Junction on a fill-in shuttle service before its main run back to Manchester Airport. The station still boasts a nice semaphore signal gantry. There can't be many of those left these days.

Semaphores at Gulumanhan

31 May 2021 4 258
The last few months of steam on the Jitong railway saw QJ class locomotives double-heading on the section between Chabuga and Daban. I always liked the semaphore signals at the passing places and particularly those at Gulumanhan, where a heavy westbound train is seen here entering the loops.

Tanks to go

The pointsman has a bored stance whilst waiting for QJ 6984 to start from a stop in the loop at Gulumanhan with a train of oil tanks heading west on the Jitong Railway.

Cameras at the ready

16 Apr 2012 226
My little camera has been playing up of late and so it was when I was preparing for a shot of the service train arriving at Swanwick Junction. This view was the result of my trying a shot just before the train arrived in order to be sure that the camera was working. It was working, sort of, but it refused to zoom at all.

The use of wooden signal posts is a particularly fine feature of the Midland Railway Centre.

Cheddleton

Dusk falls on Cheddleton Station during the Caldon Low gala. The double signal is a fairly new innovation and is a start towards bringing the loop into use here.

Before it went to the USA

12 Aug 2010 218
I spent a happy day with the crew of this locomotive as it worked along the Jitong railway between Chabuga and Daban. QJ 7081 is seen here after taking water and cleaning the fire at Gulumanhan. The signal had just cleared ready for the final leg of the journey to Daban and the crew are preparing to board. A few months later this became the regular passenger locomotive and at the end of steam on the Jitong line it was then sold to the Iowa Interstate Railroad in the United States where it is still occasionally steamed.

Oil tanks at Liudigou

26 Aug 2010 268
QJs 7040 and 6905 don't slack off at all as they enter the loop at Liudigou whilst climbing the Jinpeng section of the Jitong line with a train of oil tanks. It was the week that the first diesels appeared on this section and within months steam was gone completely from regular service over Jinpeng. It won't be long before trains are gone from this part of the line as there are plans to build a tunnel to increase line capacity, such is the level of traffic these days.

Token exchange

Exchange of tokens as the steam service crosses a dmu at Consall station on the Churnet Valley Railway.

Entering the Gulumanhan loops

The last few months of steam on the Jitong railway saw QJ class locomotives double-heading on the section between Chabuga and Daban. I always liked the semaphore signals at the passing places and particularly those at Gulumanhan, where a heavy westbound train is seen here entering the loops.

QJ7081 with a very short permanent way train stands in the loops at Gulumanhan on the Jitong railway. This is one of the locomotives now in the United States.

The Crossing Light

24 Oct 2008 319
Littons Mill Crossing has brand new warning lights on the gates. They may now be electric but look little different from the old oil burning examples. Seen in the background is the former Crosfields soapworks which has recently seen Ineos Silicas merge with PQ Corporation.
