One of Britain's scarcer dragonflies is the Common Clubtail ( Gomphus vulgatissimus ). In Cheshire it is only found along the River Dee in May and June, and even then you have to search hard to find it. This freshly emerged female was basking in the sun at Aldford.

My annual outing to Aldford on the Dee took place in perfect weather conditions for watching dragonflies. It didn't take long to find this teneral female Common Clubtail ( Gomphus vulgatissimus ) basking on the nettles.

One of Britain's scarcer dragonflies is the Common Club-tail ( Gomphus vulgatissimus ). An immature female is seen here along the River Dee in Cheshire. In Britain this species breeds in slow-flowing muddy rivers where the larvae can bury themselves in the silt.
