The geese watch over the remaining stub of the Rochdale Town arm off the Rochdale Canal. The background is formed of the remains of part of the weaving mill of Norwich Street cotton mill. The spinning mill section in the background dates from c1860 and is listed Grade II. In 1891 it was owned by John Pilling, Norwich Street and Wellfield Mills; 40,000 spindles, 1,500 looms, mexicans, twills, printers, shirtings, &c.

Passing Victoria Mill

Boating down the Rochdale Canal at Miles Platting. Victoria Mill, alongside the Rochdale Cana, was built between 1869 and 1873 to the design of Bolton architect George Woodhouse. The owner was William Holland who moved his business there from Adelphi Mill in Salford. It comprises two symmetrical six-storey cotton spinning mills separated by an engine house and a chimney that rises from a stair tower. After standing empty for a while this Grade II* listed building has now been renovated mainly for office, apartments and an adult learning centre.

Brownsfield Mill

Brownsfield Mill was constructed in 1825 as a room and power cotton mill on the side of the Rochdale Canal in the Ancoats district of Manchester with power supplied by a sixty horse power steam engine. It is Listed Grade II*.
