The light is fading as 150 137 heads a Buxton train into Hazel Grove station. Since the Blackpool trains were diverted to Manchester Airport there are only a few rush hour electric services using the line from Edgeley Junction to Hazel Grove which is a great waste of the investment that went into installing the catenary and associated infrastructure. This must be something to do with the very wonderful Northern Powerhouse that our esteemed government keeps banging on about. This is the same government that funded the Ordsall curve in Manchester to allow services between Manchester Victoria and Piccadilly stations. They also removed the funds to increase capacity between Deansgate and Piccadilly with the result that the expensive track has exactly no passenger services using it at all. Joined up thinking at its best.

4wDM 'Morris' (works number 2028) was built at Motor Rail (Simplex) Works in Bedford in 1920 and started out at Exeley & Sons Ltd in Shropshire from new. In 1935 the original petrol engine was replaced by a modern diesel design then was sold that year to Davy Morris Works in Loughborough (hence the name), working there until withdrawal in the late 1980s. Former Govia Thameslink emu 319424 cascaded to Northern is seen on the first day of operations onto the Buxton Branch at Hazel Grove where the wires finish. It was nice to ride in the erstwhile first class area which will no doubt soon be rearranged with 3 + 2 seating.

The sliding swing bridge bridge, built by the Darlington Carriage and Wagon Works, spanned the channel between No.1 dock and No.3 Dock, just above the lock. It was hydraulically operated and the pump house is listed Grade II as are both the bridge and the adjacent signal box. It does not appear that anyone cares about the structures in this view, dating from 1889, and they are steadily disintegrating through neglect. The signal box existed to operate and protect the bridge. The single internal dock line and roadway it carried connected South Side Sidings with the Graving Dock and No.2 Dock lines.
