Centrale de Monceau power station

This power station was built by the Intercom (now Electrabel) in 1921. Monceau sur Sambre was still an independent municipality and the new coal plant was one of the largest in Belgium. In the 50's and 60's, the plant was expanded and after Monceau sur Sambre in 1977 was added to the town of Charleroi this was the main supplier of energy in the region. Originally coal fired, the newer part ran on gas and stood for years standby for any emergencies. It was closed in 2007.

Brick kiln

I came across this Hoffmann kiln whilst on an industrial safari in Belgium. Although long disused for brickmaking it seemed to be in use for storage and the roof looked well maintained.

Carsid, Charleroi

Forges de la Providence was a Belgian steel producing company based in the Hainaut region around Charleroi. Founded as Société Anonyme des laminoirs, forges, fonderies et usines de la Providence the company had three steel production sites at Marchienne-au-Pont in Belgium, and Réhon and Hautmont in France. The company was independent until 1966 when it became part of the Cockerill-Ougrée, briefly being absorbed into Thy-Marcinelle et Monceau before becoming part of Cockerill-Sambre. In the 1980s the French steel plants closed, the Belgian plant continued to operate until 2008, becoming part of the Duferco group as Carsid at the beginnin of the 21st century. Coke and blast furnace production at the CARSID plant ceased in 2008 and did not restart - the plant was closed in 2012.

In the foreground is the remains of a cooling tower whilst in the background the building shows signs of the failed conversion scheme that was begun here some time ago. It was apparently stopped due to the contaminated state of the site.

The chimney really was tilting, it's not distortion from the lens!
