With the weather finally warm and sunny I headed for the west of Cheshire in search of Odonata and had a great day on the Dee and nearby marlpits. This male Four-spot was busy working his territory on a pond at Churton.

As it was sunny I decided to have a day out looking for Odonata in Cheshire close to the Dee. It may have been sunny but it was really cold and windy and insects were hard to find. This male Four-spotted Chaser had very recently emerged, as can be seen from the shiny wings which are typical of teneral specimens. It was low in the grass trying to keep out of the wind, and thus quite easy to approach.

On my dragonfly expedition there were warm corners to be found away from the cold wind, and just the other side of the hedge from the previous shot this mature male Four-spotted Chaser was busily gorging on flies. The colours are at their best in this specimen and will dull down as it ages.
