The Grade II listed pumping station of the Staffordshire Potteries Water Company at Hatton on the recent open day. The first part was built in 1892 in an Italianate style to house two compound rotary beam steam pumping engines. This was followed in 1898 with the erection of a horizontal cross compound rotary steam engine and then in 1907 a horizontal compound tandem rotary steam pumping engine was added. Steam was replaced over the period 1937-1959 when oil engines driving electric spindle pumps were installed in the former boiler house. Today the pumping station has been converted to apartments although a small museum of surviving oil engines and equipment is open on four days a year.

The wartime oil pipeline between Stanlow and Immingham ran through Poynton in Cheshire where there was a pumping station to boost the flow. At some point after the war the pipeline was realigned in this area and the pumping station abandoned. Remarkably the buildings have survived, this one containing a small office at the front and the blast wall protected space for the oil engines and pumps at the rear.

A walk in the Flintshire hills provided a surprise find with this disused pumping station at Fron-fawnog. A long way from a road.

This pumping station was built by the Isle of Axholme Drainage Board in 1910 when two tandem compound steam engines by Marshalls Sons and Company Limited of Gainsborough were installed to drive a pair of Drysdale centrifugal pumps. Steam was provided by two Cornish boilers which were also made by Marshall. The site is now partly a museum and some of the old plant is demonstrated on open days.

This grade II listed building dates from 1867 and stands over the Boating Dike / North Engine Drain. It originally contained a James Watt low pressure condensing beam engine from the Soho, Birmingham, works, driving a scoop wheel. This was replaced in 1928, and again in 1952 with electrically driven pumps.

Both boilers are worn out but this right hand boiler would be capable of restoration if this was economically practical. In fact the remaining engine will soon to be powered by a small gas-fired unit which will be easily adequate to turn the engine over without load.

I spotted this whilst driving past and returned for a closer look. It appears to be a fuel pipeline pumping station dating back to WW2. The surviving building is very similar to that at Poynton (see below) although in this case the rainheads are rather fancy.

The Stockton Brook pumping station was completed in 1884 by the Staffordshire Potteries Water Company to supply borehole water to the north-eastern side of the Potteries. The buildings housed two Davey horizontal compound tandem steam engines which were taken out of use in 1936 and replaced by electric motors. Severn Trent Water has sold the site and redevelopment is expected at some point.
