The Monton lighthouse

The lighthouse at Monton Turn on the Bridgewater Canal was completed in 2005 by local boatowner Phil Austin. He told the local paper that he planned to use it as a weekend retreat!

Mow Cop

Moc Cop Castle from Harriseahead. The folly at Mow Cop is a landmark both from the Cheshire Plain and from Staffordshire. It lies just in Cheshire whilst the old quarry in front is in Staffordshire. This is a fascinating area, once filled with collieries, brickworks, quarries, mills and tramroads, but now mainly a quiet residential area, albeit rather windswept at times. To me this is the place where the north-west and the midlands meet.

Tunstead and the temple

On a bright and breezy day with snow lying on the ground I went walking with Eagle1942 on the moors between Buxton and Macclesfield. We plodded up to the Trig Point near Axe Edge from where Eagle1942 assures me the next high ground heading eastwards is the Ural Mountains. We couldn't quite see the Urals but we did espy the buildings of the Tunstead quarry and cement plant with the folly of Solomon's Temple in the foreground. A great day to be out and about in the fresh air.
