SY 1369 fights the gradient as it brings the coal empties up from Zhengyang to the Xinghua Mine on the Jixi Coal Railway.

On the Jixi Coal Railway each morning a train of empty coal wagons was brought up to Xinghua Mine from the washery with a reversal at Zhengyang. There was a steep climb from Zhengyang and the train did not always make the summit first time. On this occasion a strong side wind was not helping and I seem to remember that this was the second attempt which was ultimately successful with SY 1369 making a lot of noise as it came into view.

Under a pale winter sun a SY class locomotive pushes the spoil tippers back from Xinghua mine to the tip on the Jixi coal railway. It was very cold.

SY 1369 fights up the bank from Zhengyang with the empties for Xinghua Colliery on the Jixi Coal Railway. I think this was the second attempt to get up the hill that morning after failing first time and backing down for a better run at it.

SY 1437 has brought another load of spoil to the Xinghua tip on the Jixi Coal Railway and the locals are picking through the waste for any coal remaining. This site was remarkable for the sheer number of pickers involved.
