The scene at West Kirby on Monday last. The walk is actually between the marine lake and the Dee estuary. If it gets choppy out there you get really wet.

The Uniper owned Connah's Quay power station is is seen along the tidal Dee behind the approach spans to the fairly new road bridge. This Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power station has a capacity of 1420MW. It is made up of four 330 MW modules - hence the four chimneys. Each module has a General Electric Frame 9FA gas turbine, a Stein Industrie heat recovery steam generator and a steam turbine; in a single-shaft layout. The gas comes via an eighteen-mile pipeline from the Point of Ayr gas terminal, where gas is received from Eni's Celtic gas fields (Hamilton and Hamilton North) in Liverpool Bay via the Douglas Complex.

Queensferry Bridge

The double-leaf Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge over the tidal Dee at Queensferry was opened in 1926 to replace the 1897 Victoria Jubilee Bridge which incorporated a retractable timber structure. The new bridge was designed by Mott Hay and Anderson, and built by Sir William Arrol and Co. Ltd, for £83,051. The lifting spans, totalling 134ft are now fixed in place and the barges carrying Airbus wings have to arrive at a low enough state of the tide to allow headroom for them to pass.
White-legged Damselfly

The White-legged Damselfly ( Platycnemis pennipes ) only appeared in Cheshire in 2007 when the first specimens were seen on the Dee around Farndon. The species has probably migrated northward from the Severn where there are good populations. A walk at Farndon this afternoon proved that they are still present when I spotted this teneral female on the riverbank.

River Dee Aldford

There are some lovely and secret places on the River Dee, such as this length upriver from the Iron Bridge at Aldford. A tranquil location with nobody else around - magic!
