Battery power

31 May 2023 2 119
230 008 arrives at Neston on a run to Wrexham Central. A ride on this battery powered train, using heavily modified ex London Underground stock, was smooth with rapid acceleration from the several stops. There are many seats in fours with tables and all seats coincide with windows (praise be!). These units are not yet proving very reliable and another unit had failed on this line earlier in the day. The other services on this route were being worked by a Transport for Wales class 150 unit.

Wirral Colliery Co

The coal mining industry on the Wirral has a long history with extensive workings stretching under the Dee estuary towards North Wales. This last colliery closed in July 1928 and this view from the 1930s shows the site of the Wirral Colliery soon after the shafts had been walled up in brick for safety. The main winding shaft in later years was that on the furthest right.

Jackson's Tower detail

Whilst the Ruabon terracotta on Jackson's Tower is of a high standard, sadly the 'pointing' appears to have come out of a tube.

Jackson's Tower

This fine Ruabon brick building on Parkgate Road in Neston was erected alongside his shop by the local chemist and postmaster George Jackson. There was once a clock in the tower but the chimes apparently clashed with those of the local church. There are some fine examples of Ruabon terracotta in the decoration on the building.

A sign from the days when traffic was slow enough to be able to read the whole message. Neston - Cheshire.

Neston Town Hall

Another terracotta building at Neston in North West Cheshire although the Town Hall of 1888 looks to me as if the decorative work was cut back and brief research suggests that the finances were tight when this was built. Red Ruabon brick and a small amount of decoration.
