Tarboat on the move

04 Jan 2022 1 2 165
Ex Thomas Clayton tanker Spey takes the turn under the old railway bridge between locks 11 and 12 at Bosley on the Macclesfield Canal. The boat was built in 1937 at Uxbridge and spent its career moving gas oil from Ellesmere Port to Oldbury and also gasworks byeproducts around the West Midlands. It has been in preservation since the 1960s.

A pleasant afternoon working the tarboat up the locks at Marple on the Peak Forest Canal. On the approach to lock 3 our Jefferson observes the action.

Stuck

07 May 2018 2 287
The tanker narrowboat is well and truly stuck at Bridge 86 on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal due to a combination of rubbish in the cut and low water levels. Use of block and tackle and the application of a number of passing walkers to pull on the rope soon had things moving again.

Pearl No.81

03 Nov 2014 566
Wooden narrowboats are a rare beast these days due to the cost and difficulty of maintaining them in good order. Pearl was originally built for carrying gasworks by-products and gas oil around the West Midlands and from Ellesmere Port to Oldbury. Originally a horse boat built in 1935 it was converted to a motor boat in 1945. For a long time this boat was moored on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Wincham but fell on hard times and was seized by the Waterways people. Luckily it wasn't dragged out and left to rot on the bank and is now at the boatyard at Saul on the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. I do hope that someone will lavish some love and attention on this historic craft before it is too late.

Malkin's Bank

Went boating today and came home soaked because of a very heavy squall just as it got dark. A great day's boating all the same. Tanker narrowboat seen on the Wheelock flight approaching the double locks at Malkin's Bank. The lock on the right has moved inwards and is out of gauge and out of use.

Preparing to enter Ellesmere Port

21 Apr 2011 1 322
Looking rather small on the vast expanses of the Manchester Ship Canal, a narrowboat tanker is swinging in to enter the bottom basin of the Shropshire Union Canal at Ellesmere Port. This particular boat once regularly made this entrance after loading gas oil at the Stanlow oil refinery a short distance up the Ship Canal.
