Weight restriction sign on a small bridge. These signs were once common but few now survive. How will the drivers of heavy motor cars now know whether the bridge is sufficient?

This enamel notice specifying minimum safety standards at the Quarry Pit of Poynton Collieries dates from the 1890s. At that time this particular pit was working a localised two foot thick seam of coal. Production ended at Quarry Pit in 1907.

In 1853 I wonder how many of the workmen would have been able or inclined to read this notice? By inference it appears to have been ok to smoke and use naked lights in pits where gas was not present. As far as I know all the Poynton pits were gassy!

Not many of these left in situ. So often stolen by collectors or scrap men. :-(
