On the hill

06 Dec 2018 3 2 321
The Huanan Coal Railway is now just a memory but back at the end of November 2006 it was still busy bringing coal over the hills to Huanan. The climb from Lixin required banking using the locomotive from the train that was loading at the mine. This train was on the last big curve before the final slog to the summit where the banker would drop off and run back.

Portarlington power station

All was quiet when I called at the Portarlington peat-fired power station and the Ruston diesel was standing with a wagon loaded with boiler ash ready for a Monday morning trip to the tip on the worked out bog. Thanks to Ted McAvoy for help with the explanation.

Resavica Coal Mine

Coal has been mined at Resavica for around 150 years. Here a battery-electric locomotive shunts two tubs of materials into the railway workshop area. There are adits on both sides of the river at this location, one of which is off camera in the bottom left of this view.

Limestone on the narrow gauge

Another shot through a train window. Following on from my previous image , the cement works near Hailar appears to be served by a narrow gauge railway that brings in the limestone from quarries several miles away. The last shot I took before it became too dark for photography was this view of a diesel locomotive hauling a long train of loaded bogie wagons heading for the works.
