National Coal Board ownership is declared on the gate at the entrance to Lady Victoria Colliery. This is now the National Mining Museum Scotland.

Winding engine

The Lady Victoria Colliery was regarded as a show-piece pit when it was opened in 1894 by the Lothian Coal Company. The 2400 hp winding engine was made by Grant Ritchie & Co Ltd, Kilmarnock. It is twin cylinder horizontal with 42" diam steam jacketted cylinders, 7' stroke, and Cornish drop valves. The winding drum is 20' diam and 10'6" wide and was replaced by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co in 1964. The brakes were also replaced by Barclay in 1953.

Lady Victoria Colliery at Newtongrange is now the Scottish National Mining Museum. The colliery was sunk by the Lothian Coal Company in 1890 and came into production in 1894. It was closed in 1981.
