Eastern half of the swinging footbridge over the channel between Gladstone and Alexandra docks, Liverpool. I suspect it hasn't been swung for quite a while.

Swing bridge alongside the channel into Alexandra Dock from Hornby Dock at Liverpool. The dock was built by George Fosbery Lyster between 1874 and 1882. During its construction, the dock was known as Atlantic Dock for about a year. Opened in 1881 and named in honour of Queen Alexandra, the dock has three branch docks, of which the southernmost has been filed-in, and is connected to Hornby Dock to the north and Langton Dock to the south. Initially, access was through Langton Dock and the Canada Basin. The main trade of the dock was once grain and frozen meat but is now recycled scrap metal.

'The White Bridge' in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland, was built in the mid 19th century and spans a total of 542ft - with an opening span of 120ft to accommodate large sailing vessels - was designed by G.W. Hemans and built in 1850. It was the single greatest engineering task during the construction of the Dublin to Galway railway line and took less than 18 months to construct.
Built with twelve cylindrical pillars - each 10ft in diameter - they were placed in position by compressed air which made engineering history at the time.
Messrs. Fox & Henderson were the contractors who shipped the massive ironworks via barge from Limerick to Athlone. It is listed in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.
The first commercial train crossed 'The White Bridge' Athlone on Monday 21st July, 1851.
The swinging span was permanently fixed in 1972.

Boothferry Bridge

Boothferry Bridge was built between 1926 and 1929. It replaced the ferry service by boat, from which the district took its name - Boothferry. This swing bridge crosses the Ouse and opens to allow shipping to pass through on its way to Selby amongst other places. Until the building of the M62 motorway and the Ouse bridge, it was the only point at which to cross the river without a round trip to Selby. This bridge carried most of the traffic traveling south from the port of Hull. The Humber bridge has relieved a lot of the southbound traffic and the M62 now carries the bulk of the traffic that otherwise would have used Boothferry bridge.

Having seen Eagle142's recent image of this spot, I thought it would be fun to post this postcard view from just over 100 years ago. The card was posted in 1906 and it is interesting to see that it is captioned "Fool's Nook" even at that time when the pub was the Royal Oak.
