Wild pumping
Ridgegate
23 Feb 2012 |
|
I took a walk up from Langley up Tegg's Nose this morning and was presented with this view across Ridgegate Reservoir to a misty Macclesfield Forest. It's a great place to live and I do so enjoy being able to walk in such grand countryside.
Pumping station

Spotted this derelict pumping station whilst mooching around near Penrhyn slate quarry. It had a nice little underground reservoir and various valves and tanks. The motive power, which I think had been an electric motor, was gone.
Higherfence

The sun was rather too high in the sky for taking the best shot here, but I was really taken by the view. Seen whilst mooching around looking at colliery remains above Macclesfield, this is the lower of the two Higherfence reservoirs that once served a dyeing and bleaching works.

The moment the mist began to lift over Ogden Reservoir. Musbury Heights Quarry scrubbing mill chimney stands on the skyline.
The Poynton Gasholder
10 Nov 2008 |
|
When the Poynton Collieries closed in August 1935 the gasworks passed to Stockport Corporation which quickly closed it down, having laid pipes from Hazel Grove to connect to their own supply. The 1877 gasholder was dismantled and moved to Hilltop Farm at Higher Poynton where it was re-erected for use as a reservoir supplying water to the local area. It is still there today although no longer in use.
The writing in the casting reads:
'ERECTED BY NEWTON CHAMBERS & CO THORNCLIFFE IRONWORKS SHEFFIELD 1877'

Leathers Smithy

The brooding slopes of Tegg's Nose Country Park loom over the Leathers Smithy public house. In the foreground the waters of Ridgegate Reservoir form a familiar whirlpool before heading to the taps and showers of the good citizens of Macclesfield.
Rudyard Lake

A bright start to New Year's Day 2007 and a brisk walk around Rudyard Lake was in order. The reservoir was looking its best in the pale sunshine.
Rudyard Lake

A New Year's Day walk around Rudyard Lake provided an opportunity for this against the light view shortly before midday. It was surprising that within half an hour it was hailing and raining heavily.
