Letoff valve

The canal line plans of 1891 describe this runoff paddle as a Letoff Valve. It is on Bollington embankment near Clarence Mill on the Macclesfield Canal, and is notable for being one of (if not the only) last examples of the original paddlegear that was used for the runoff sluices and ground and sidepond paddles at Bosley locks.

Vale Royal top sluice

Whilst the rain in Cheshire has been somewhat less than in Yorkshire there is still a lot of water trying to escape to the sea. On 25th June alone 1.45 inches of rain fell.
On the Weaver the top sluice feeding into the old river at Vale Royal was lifted to its maximum height in order to take water away from Winsford. I have before never seen it raised so high and the flow below was spectacular.
