RWE Power operate the Inden opencast mine with the output of Brown Coal going to their nearby power station. The Inden mine in the Aachen City Region extends from the municipality of Aldenhoven and the A 44 (Düsseldorf-Aachen) motorway in the north to the A 4 (Cologne-Aachen) motorway in the south. In 2017 there were reserves of 260 million tonnes with output capacity of 20 million tonnes per annum. Block 10

The Duisburg-Walsum power station was built in 1928 to use coal from the adjacent Walsum coal mine. It has subsequently been expanded and modernised with increasingly large generating plant. The latest is Block 10 on which construction started in 2006 with a view to commissioning in 2010. Unfortunately the use of a low-alloy steel, designed for higher pressures and temperatures, in the evaporator section of the boiler led to over 3,000 leaky welds and after rectification more leaks during the testing process in May 2011. The faulty section had to be replaced with tried and tested steel and it was not until April 2013 that the boiler was fired for the first time using oil. Sunsequently the boiler has been run on hard coal and after problems with the Hitachi generator were resolved the plant has been able to generate up to 800Mw and commercial operation began in December 2013. The late completion of the plant has led to a number of damages claims running to hundreds of millions of Euros.

Mining here ended on June 30th 2000 and these are the only two of seven headframes that this mine once had at a number of locations in the area. Some of the surface building have been preserved or have found new uses.

This limestone quarry In the upper Hönnetal was established in 1929 with three flare kilns producing burnt lime. These were superceded by these two shaft kilns in 1962 which worked continuously until 1995. When running they were fed with 4500kg of limestone and 370 kg of coke every 18 minutes. Today the quarry is still in production for limestone under the managment of the Cemex group.
