Garrets

16 Mar 2021 148
This terraced row on Ashbourne Road in Leek harks back to the days of cottage industry with a series of garret rooms on the top floor. These would have housed hand looms for weaving silk cloth. The long windows were designed to allow maximum light into the room. Since I took this photo most of the windows and doors have been replaced with plastic.

13-20 High Street

There aren't many listed buildings in Cleator Moor, but this late 19th century block on High Street drew the attention of the historic buildings officers. It is listed Grade II. Business was not particularly thriving.

Victorian originality is a rare beast indeed when it comes to terraced houses and this example immediately caught my eye whilst walking through Macclesfield. The door, fanlight and windows are still in original form. Use of stone step, sill and lower facing is contrasted with the brick facia, arch and lintel work. I am advised that the brickwork is in Flemish bond with queen closers. It is unlikely that the door and windows will survive when the property is "modernised".

Rupert Street, Nelson

Former Co-op in one of the many terraced street around Nelson continues partly in use selling groceries. The weaving mill at the bottom of the street is still in business too!

Paradise

The stepped terraced houses with weaver's garrets is Paradise Street. The whole terrace was modernised in the 1970s and saved from impending demolition by our caring and conservation minded council. The nearer mill is Bridge Street Mills whilst in the background is Brown Street Mill which is very slowly being converted into apartments after years of dereliction. In the right foreground are the houses with roof gardens on the corner of Bridge Street and Henderson Street.

39 High Street

This row of houses on High Street, Macclesfield, are dated 1848. The property on the corner of John Street is No.39 and is shown in the local trade directories as having been in 1878 the premises of John Worthington, beer retailer. By 1910 it was occupied by Arthur Sherwin, Grocer. The surviving shop window and bricked-up remains of the other are certainly indicative of such use.

A view from the church

Heritage Open Days saw Christ Church in Macclesfield open to view so I took the opportunity to photograph the interior of the redundant building. Whilst in the gallery I was taken by this view down onto Waterloo Street West and the roofs of Roe Street.

Ludlow Street

There is a lot of house clearance going on in the Potteries. Street after street in this area was either boarded-up or had just a few properties still occupied. Ludlow Street has almost certainly been razed by now and the community has been scattered across the city. I met an elderly lady in the street who complained bitterly that people were being rehoused miles apart from each other and she hated the idea of being separated from her friends and neighbours.

Shaw Street

Early industrial housing is becoming scarce these days as towns are 'improved' by the planners and developers. This short terrace is in Shaw Street, Macclesfield and was built in 1814. Although in a run down condition until recently there are now signs that improvements and repairs are being made.
