Taking the tarboat down the Hanwell locks towards Brentford. It was a very cold day when we experienced gales, hail, thunder, rain and sun.

Rushall Locks

Tanker narrowboat descending the lower section of the Rushall Locks near Walsall on the Birmingham Canal Navigations. There isn't much traffic on these further reaches of the BCN which is a great shame as the boating is lovely.
No boats

Good Friday at Bosley Locks and not a boat to be seen in the ice. This must be the first Easter that I haven't seen a boat on the move at the locks, but then the canal isn't usually frozen at Easter.
Marple locks

Tanker narrowboat leaving lock 2 on the Marple flight on its way to the Ashton Canal. Marple locks are very rural on the lower half of the flight and shortly after leaving the bottom you then find yourself sailing over the Goyt on Outram's fine stone aqueduct.
Malkin's Bank

Went boating today and came home soaked because of a very heavy squall just as it got dark. A great day's boating all the same. Tanker narrowboat seen on the Wheelock flight approaching the double locks at Malkin's Bank. The lock on the right has moved inwards and is out of gauge and out of use.
Powering around the turn

It was Middlewich Boat & Folk weekend and there was lots happening around the canal. Here the tanker narrowboat is powered around the tight turn between the second and top locks on the Middlewich flight. The drydock is just off to the right on the outside of the bend.

Bentley Canal top lock
09 Mar 2011 |
|
Opened in 1843 the Bentley Canal ran down a flight of 10 locks from the junction with the Wyrley & Essington Canal at Wednesfield for a distance of nearly three and a half miles to its junction with the Anson Branch. The section from the bottom of the six Wednesfield Locks to the Anson Branch was closed in 1960. The rest remained open but in reality became unusable very quickly due to lack of maintenance and removal of paddlegear. A few intrepid boaters forced a passage in the early 1970s and then it was abandoned and filled in. This view from April 1984 shows the top lock before infilling commenced. It looks usable, but in reality the canal behind me is drained and full of rubbish. Today the scene is virtually unrecognisable with industrial units built on the canal line.

Lock 13

|
Lock 13 at Marple proved to be the very devil of a job to clear of mud when the Peak Forest Canal Society set about it with barrow hoist and men with shovels. Each time we started work something would break. The pump would stop working or the hoist failed, or some other disaster would befall the job. Instead of a weekend it took several weeks before it was finally emptied of that black mud. This photo was taken at the beginning of the Lock 13 saga in September 1972.
Boat Museum

The terminus of the Wirral line of the Chester Canal is at Ellesmere Port where the paired Whitby Locks once led to the Mersey and now lead down to the Manchester Ship Canal. Currently home to the Boat Museum the site is well worth a visit.
The locks can be seen to the right of this shot with the hydraulic enginehouse, boilerhouse and chimney left of centre. The island warehouse stands behind with the three hipped roof sections just visible.

Industrial devastation encroaches in the background. Today the scene is virtually unrecognisable with industrial units built on the canal line.
