The Lady Victoria Colliery was regarded as a show-piece pit when it was opened in 1894 by the Lothian Coal Company. The 2400 hp winding engine was made by Grant Ritchie & Co Ltd, Kilmarnock. It is twin cylinder horizontal with 42" diam steam jacketted cylinders, 7' stroke, and Cornish drop valves. The winding drum is 20' diam and 10'6" wide and was replaced by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co in 1964. The brakes were also replaced by Barclay in 1953.

Car House Colliery along with Aldwarke Main, to which it was connected underground, in Rotherham was ocquired by the Sheffield steelmakers Sir John Brown & Co in 1873. It appears to have been closed soon after flooding claimed the lives of eight miners in 1913 and the 1923 OS map shows much of the site cleared. In spite of being closed for 100 years there are still some buildings surviving from the pit, including this winding enginehouse in the yard of a waste management company.

This building contains a double single cylinder beam geared haulage engine that was built in 1829 by the Butterley Company to wind wagons on the 708 yard Middleton Incline on a gradient of 1 in 8.25. The incline was closed in summer 1963 and the engine is now in the care of Derbyshire County Council. On some open days it is run using compressed air.

A very pleasant visit to the preserved colliery site at Pleasley where the volunteers were most accommodating and informative. The view here is from the driver's seat at the Lilleshall Company built winding engine for the downcast shaft.

Not the style of colliery winding enginehouse that western eyes are used to seeing. This building serves a small colliery in Meihekou, north-east China.

I noticed that the Middleton Top enginehouse was open yesterday and when I arrived there were no other visitors inside, which allowed me plenty of time to take photos and to talk to the very knowledgeable warden.
