Viterra owned grain silos at Port Pirie on the Spencer Gulf in South Australia. The maximum loading capacity under the spouts was 800 tonnes per hour. The company last used the Port Pirie terminal as a direct export shipping facility in 2005 and grain from here is now sent by rail to the deep water berths at Port Adelaide.

The origins of the Timm business was in 1854 when Edward Timm rented a five sail windmill and three storey steam mill on Boothferry Road, Goole. This led to the foundation of E Timm & Son Ltd, flour millers. Timm Grain Ltd closed the mill with the loss of 72 jobs in April 2001. These silos on Goole Docks remained in use for a number of years but the site was cleared in early 2019.

Grain silos at Broken Hill in New South Wales. The grain must be brought from quite a distance as Broken Hill sits in the midst of semi-desert outback and I saw no sign of cultivation.

Orroroo silos

The town of Orroroo was once connected by rail to Peterborough and Quorn, and was served by a Class 1 station and a large Goods Shed. During 1962 concrete grain silos were built in the Yard. These provided the bulk of traffic until the railway was closed in 1987. Since then the grain is trucked from here to a rail head (eg at Gladstone). It then travels by train to one of the ports that take grain ships - Port Adelaide, Port Pirie or Wallaroo.

If you want ready-mixed concrete in Sheffield then this is the place to come to. Hope Construction Materials operate this plant on Harvest Lane, close to the city centre. The mixing tower incorporates a large Braithwaite tank adjacent to the cement silo.

Most of Fairclough's Mill alongside the Mersey in Warrington has been demolished but this grain silo remains as it carries a range of telecommunications aerials and transmitters. The 'Pink Eye' mural is the work of local artist Anthony Turk, but only after a long battle with the local planning authorities who claimed it would distract drivers.
Access is via the Littons Mill level crossing seen at lower left.
