Polkey's Mill

08 Jul 2023 1 201
This drainage mill was restored by the Norfolk Windmills Trust between 1981 and 2006. It is unusual in that the sails rotate in a clockwise direction unlike most mills. It worked until 1941 when new diesel engines were installed nearby. The corrugated iron Seven Mile pumping shed houses the two Ruston Hornsby diesel engines which operated until 1984. The building was moved to its present position during flood defence works in 2003.

Blades on the bridge

Whilst waiting for the train at Kyle of Lochalsh we were surprised to see three windmill blades being transported across the Skye Bridge away from the Island. I would love to know where they were coming from and where they were going. I can only surmise that these had been taken from an existing structure and replaced by new ones.

Holiday accommodation

The windmill at Burnham Overy Staithe was built in 1816 for miller Edmund Savory. It worked until 1919 and in 1926 was sold to Hugh Hughes, an architect from Grantchester, Cambridgeshire. Hughes who had the mill converted to holiday accommodation. After significant repairs in 1957 it passed to the National Trust. It is listed Grade II*.

Fort Green windmill

Fort Green windmill on the shorline at Aldeburgh was built in 1824. Converted to a house in 1902, it has since seen a number of additions on and around the original structure.

Burland Windmill

For many years I coveted the derelict windmill at Burland near Nantwich in Cheshire. Now it has been sympathetically incorporated into an unusual house and looks loved and cared for. The windmill on top of a windmill is a feature retained from its earlier history. I assume that the small mill drove a water pump rather than being anything to do with the mill in its corn milling days.

Heage Windmill

The six sail Heage windmill is an excellent example of local preservation. The enthusiastic group that run the mill provide informative guided tours on Sundays throughout the summer. To see the sails moving round in the breeze was an inspiring sight.
