Quarry barn

29 Apr 2020 2 199
This roofless building with a curved frontage is built against the face of a small limestone quarry in the parish of Tissington, not far from Ashbourne, Derbyshire. To the right are the remains of an earthen limekiln. There is no definitive account of its purpose but my interpretation is that it was erected after the quarrying ended and was used as a field barn, taking advantage of the two levels that made it easy to place feedstuffs in the top storey.

Disused field kiln in the Parish of Tissington, north of Ashbourne. The stone for this kiln was quarried from the field alongside.
