Combined heat and power

27 Dec 2023 2 150
The 210 MW Shotton Combined Heat and Power station, located in Deeside, North Wales, was built for TXU Europe and completed in 2002. The company soon went into receivership and the plant was sold in October 2003 to Gaz de France which operated the station under sister company Cofathec Heatsave. The plant used General Electric 6FA gas turbines. Power was exported to the National Grid and the station also supplied steam to UPM Kymmene UK's paper mill at Shotton. In a typical year around half a million tonnes of steam was supplied to the paper mill. In March 2012 GDF SUEZ Energy International announced that the station was no longer economic and would be closed by the end of the year. It was demolished in 2014.

The Uniper owned Connah's Quay power station is is seen along the tidal Dee behind the approach spans to the fairly new road bridge. This Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power station has a capacity of 1420MW. It is made up of four 330 MW modules - hence the four chimneys. Each module has a General Electric Frame 9FA gas turbine, a Stein Industrie heat recovery steam generator and a steam turbine; in a single-shaft layout. The gas comes via an eighteen-mile pipeline from the Point of Ayr gas terminal, where gas is received from Eni's Celtic gas fields (Hamilton and Hamilton North) in Liverpool Bay via the Douglas Complex.

Deeside Power Station is sited on land of a former British Steel steelworks, and was commissioned in November 1994, costing £200 million. It was built by Alstom for National Power and from 2001 by International Power, the new-formed company of National Power. Following the completion of the acquisition of International Power by GDF SUEZ in June 2012, International Power has been rebranded as GDF SUEZ Energy International. It is a CCGT-type power station which runs on natural gas. There are two 166 MWe Alstom GT13E2 gas turbines, from which the exhaust gas at 525 °C enters two heat recovery steam generators. The steam from these powers one 176 MWe steam turbine. It has a thermal efficiency of 53%. Cooling water for the condenser is taken from the River Dee.
