Black '5' 45379 has just shut off for the level crossing at Apesford as it heads an afternoon service towards Caldon Low. The bulk of Shutlingsloe stand proud on the horizon.

The first day of the Churnet Valley Railway steam weekend was blessed with a lot of sunshine and a strong cold wind. The Black '5' from the Mid Hants Railway is seen here approaching the crossing at Apesford on its second run of the day up to Caldon Low. This shot is special to me because it also features the mighty Shutlingsloe in the far distance.

Working in the dark

The penultimate Sunday train up to Caldon Low was due at the end of the line at 15.50. The reality was that 34028 was only passing Ladymeadows Farm at 16.00, about 20 minutes late. By then it was almost dark, so it was up to ISO 1600 and hope for the best. The bush and gatepost are not in the ideal position, but this is sharper than some of the other images I took here. I was invited onto the field by the landowner who kindly held my dogs' leads whilst I was taking the photos.

In the narrow band between the low lying and upland fog banks it was possible to see sunlit action. 34028 'Eddystone" has been a star performer at the Caldon Low gala and is greatly liked by the crews. The locomotive was running up the bank with a crisp exhaust and clearly well in control of the train.
