Black 5 at Winkhill

06 Mar 2023 2 158
44767 is about to cross one of the accommodation arches above Winkhill on the now lifted section of the Caldon Low line. It is such a shame that we can no longer see locomotives working hard up towards the quarries.

Limeburning

13 Feb 2020 178
Commercial limeburning at the end of the eighteenth century was often undertaken in areas with several earth faced intermittent kilns. This example at Cauldon Low is typical of the remains to be found, with the kiln showing the front face broken down to extract the burned lime.

Caldon Low tramroad tunnel

The fourth and final tramroad linking the Caldon Low limestone quarries with Froghall Wharf on the Caldon Canal was built to the designs of James Trubshaw and completed in January 1847. It comprised four self-acting inclined planes of 3ft 6ins gauge and included a tunnel on the top section. The tunnel starts at the uphill end with a wide section which accommodated the three rail layout and four rail passing place, and then about a quarter of the way down narrows to a single track bore for the remainder. This image shows the tunnel at the point where the bore is narrowing down to single track. It was abandoned in 1920.

Approaching "Illegal Crossing"

Eddystone powers up the bank towards the unofficial level crossing on the way up to Bradnop from Leekbrook.

Departing Threshing Barn crossing

12 Jan 2011 242
In rapidly failing light I was waiting for this train which was running about half an hour late. The shot I was planning was with the train rather nearer to me and clear of the bushes, but I was taken with the exhaust and the banker being just visible here as the train set off from the stop for the accommodation crossing. If only that hedge had not been there! Eddystone leading and 8F 8624 at the rear. 1/125 at f/4.0 1600ASA. It's amazing what you can still shoot with modern digital cameras.

Above Winkhill

14 Nov 2010 279
8624 climbing hard above Winkhill banked by 71000 on an afternoon service to Caldon Low. It may have been dull today but the steam action was still excellent.

Crossed wires

16 Nov 2010 265
34028 banked by 44767 above Winkhill and heading for Caldon Low. The Lafarge cement works stands prominent in the background. Maybe one day cement will come from there by rail.

Climbing past Winkhill

21 Nov 2010 282
The strong north-easterly wind whips the exhaust down and away from 34028 Eddystone as it climbs away from Winkhill trowards Caldon Low on the Sunday of the 1960s steam and diesel weekend on the Caldon Low branch. In the left background, partly obscured by steam, is the Winkhill station house. Above the trees can be seen the board for the Blackbrook Crossings. This gives some idea of the sinuous nature of the line around Winkhill.

Accommodation arch

There are several accommodation arches above Winkhill on the Caldon Low line. 44767 is seen here crossing the uppermost arch on the way up to Caldon Low.

Caldon Low departure

25 059 on the bank down to Winkhill shortly after leaving the current reversing point at Caldon Low. The distant processing and loading buildings for the quarry are due for demolition.
