8F to Caldon

On the day of the public reopening of the Caldon Low branch of the Churnet Valley Railway, 8F 8624 climbs hard after passing the former station at Winkhill. This section no longer carries trains after the line was lifted east of the current terminus at Ipstones.

44767 is about to cross one of the accommodation arches above Winkhill on the now lifted section of the Caldon Low line. It is such a shame that we can no longer see locomotives working hard up towards the quarries.

71000 Duke of Gloucester heads the first official train above Winkhill on the reopening day of the line to Caldon Low in 2010. Sadly since then the track has been lifted beyond Ipstones and this view cannot be repeated.

Fighting the fog on the Caldon Low line during the 2010 extended reopening gala. 71000 is seen at Blackbrook Crossing. The track has now been lifted here and it remains to be seen whether it will ever return.
The perils of the wind

It was bad enough having virtually no light, but the wind added to the photographic problems as 5199 smokes out much of the train as it climbs above Winkhill towards the Caldon Low quarries.

The wind was causing all sorts of problems with the smoke but it lifted enough to allow a view of 5199 on the climb to Caldon Low after passing the site of Winkhill Station.

Another good spot for photography on the Caldon Low line is Blackbrook Crossing where 34028 Eddystone is seen on the Sunday of the steam gala.

8624 climbing hard above Winkhill banked by 71000 on an afternoon service to Caldon Low. It may have been dull today but the steam action was still excellent.

34028 banked by 44767 above Winkhill and heading for Caldon Low. The Lafarge cement works stands prominent in the background. Maybe one day cement will come from there by rail.

Today's services on the Caldon Low line were mainly in fog. I had planned a number of photospots for the day and at several of these it was not possible to see anything of the line at all. This led to drastic replanning and making the best of the conditions in the areas where you could at least see the train.
Blackbrook Crossing proved to be a decent place for the morning service as it headed up the gradient away from Caldon Low with 8F 8624 running tender first in the murk.

The strong north-easterly wind whips the exhaust down and away from 34028 Eddystone as it climbs away from Winkhill trowards Caldon Low on the Sunday of the 1960s steam and diesel weekend on the Caldon Low branch. In the left background, partly obscured by steam, is the Winkhill station house. Above the trees can be seen the board for the Blackbrook Crossings. This gives some idea of the sinuous nature of the line around Winkhill.

There are several accommodation arches above Winkhill on the Caldon Low line. 44767 is seen here crossing the uppermost arch on the way up to Caldon Low.
