Chelford Arms Depot

07 Nov 2016 765
Originally planned as a filling factory (ROF Macclesfield - Factory No.13), the site was requisitioned before 1941 and was open as an ammunition store by 1942. The fourteen standard sheds continued in use until 1964. The surviving buildings are now in agricultural and light industrial use.

The long way to Wales

22 Jul 2012 1 280
The North Wales Coast Express from Crewe to Holyhead takes a very odd route in first heading for Manchester before going to Warrington and Chester. At an early stage in the journey A4 'Union of South Africa' is seen passing Nether Alderley, already 10 minutes late. On the other hand it was sunny!

Scarborough bound

46233 'Duchess Of Sutherland' was at the head of this morning's Scarborough Flyer at Nether Alderley. In the last few minutes before the train arrived the sun broke through and at last we were blessed with a shot in bright light.

Scarborough Flyer - Nether Alderley

23 Jan 2012 322
There wasn't a lot of sun in August but I did manage to catch 6201 Princess Elizabeth in good light one morning as the Scarborough Flyer hurried past Nether Alderley. The brick building was the guard house at the entrance to the Sandle Heath munitions store that operated from WWII until the 1960s. There were extensive sidings here at one time, with the line into the storage areas heading off to the left of frame.

6201 again!

6201 " Princess Elizabeth " leads this morning's Scarborough Flyer past Nether Alderley. We had hoped for a 'Black 5' for a change, but it was not to be.

Nether Alderley

6201 heads the Scarborough Flyer towards the Wilmslow stop as it passes under the bridge at Nether Alderley. It is interesting that there are two repeater signals here due to both the lines being set up for bi-directional traffic.

Another dull Friday

29 Jul 2011 214
The sun never seems to shine on Friday mornings when there is steam running from Crewe to Scarborough. 34067 Tangmere was in charge again today and is seen at Nether Alderley. Just to make matters worse the drive shut off just after this shot and drifting smoke then obscured a lot of the train at the point where I really wanted a photo. Thanks again to Eagle 142 for transport.

Sunshine at Nether Alderley

19 Aug 2011 231
It was back to 6201 'Princess Elizabeth' on the Scarborough Flyer today. Sunshine, for the first time this year when this train was running, catches the exhaust as speed builds up passing Nether Alderley. The building on the left is the gaurdhouse a the point where a siding entered the Royal Ordnance Factory Chelford site. This operated as a munitions store from 1942 to c1964 and had an extensive railway system operated by industrial diesel locomotives.

Not available for much longer

The tree tubes suggest that this view of 6201 taking the Scarborough Flyer over the Alderley Edge bypass will soon be hidden. I cannot understand the need to impose trees on every bit of spare land. So many good views have been lost due to this plague of green.

Scarborough Flyer at Soss Moss

20 Aug 2010 243
Another dull morning for photographing the Scarborough Flyer, this time approaching the bridge at Soss Moss between Chelford and Alderley Edge. I was hoping to catch a few cows in the foreground, but by the time the train arrived they had moved too far up the field towards me. I could hear the train start from the loop at Chelford and it was wonderful to here it working hard all the way to where it came into view. Thanks once again to Eagle142 for transport and good company.

6201 Scarborough Flyer at Soss Moss - tighter crop

I wasn't entirely happy with my first effort with this shot and have had another go with a tighter crop. I think I prefer this one to the wider view.
