A lot to see in this view over the mills at Port Talbot steelworks to the coke ovens in the background.

S.A. Cokeries et Houillères d'Anderlues first erected coke ovens in 1904 which were replaced by new ones in 1931. The works produced foundry coke and was one of the smallest and oldest coke by-product plants still operating in Belgium at the time of closure in November 2002.

Broadhead Colliery Coke Ovens

The 6 inch OS map surveyed in 1849/50 shows a series of coal pits on the moors north of Edgworth within Blackburn & Darwen. These are marked as comprising Broad-head Colliery and central to these workings are a series of beehive coke ovens to convert the small coal from the workings. By the late 19th century the pits were long abandoned and today can be identified by their collapsed shafts and associated spoil tips. The colliery remains and coke ovens are a scheduled ancient monument but this does not seem to mean that there is much chance of their preservation. What is left of the coke ovens are the fused shell and inner linings standing out of the moor as they slowly decay and disintegrate. A lonely place, which probably accounts for the survival of these few bits.

Jubilee Colliery at Crompton near Oldham. This pit, which was once operated by Platt Bros, closed in 1932. These are the bases of two of the beehive coke oven that were on the site.

Coke works

Coke ovens and coke car at the mini cokeworks outside Hegang in Heilongjiang Province, China. This was fairly newly built when I visited in 2005 and yet seems to have been demolished on the latest aerial images. Industry moves on fast in China! I was waved in to take photos this time but when I returned in 2008 the whole place was locked down tight with big fences and security guards.

The chimney really was tilting, it's not distortion from the lens!

Schofield Hall Colliery coke ovens

Schofield Hall Colliery was served by a drift or 'Breast-Eye' as they are known locally. There are also a number of shafts in the nearby woods. It was operating before 1850 and in 1853 was owned by James Fielding and John Whittle. The 1851 OS map shows the coke ovens and a tramroad running from the drift. H & L Newall were owners in 1861 and it is likely that the ovens went out of use by 1870. James Howard ran a very small operation here in the 1890s but by 1908 the colliery is listed as discontinued. There are remains of four beehive coke ovens on the site. As is usual with similar ovens in the area the stone facings have been robbed, leaving the backs of the ovens to slowly deteriorate.
