The surviving building from the Butt Lane Co-operative Society premises near Kidsgrove, is an extension that was erected in 1903 and included a meeting hall. The original premises had terracotta signage but by 1903 the identification was in stark concrete.

I find the great variety of industrial chimneys and pipework fascinating and attempt to record it whilst on my travels. This is part of the Huntsman Pigments and Additives plant next to the Trent & Mersey Canal at Kidsgrove. The site was formerly occupied by the Brookfield Foundry & Engineering Co Ltd as their California Works. Huntsman is one of the largest worldwide suppliers of inorganic color pigments for construction, coatings, plastics and specialty applications. The company manufactures and processes iron oxide and mixed metal oxide color pigments and supplies a wide range of natural and synthetic inorganic pigments.

Thomas Kinnersly was the founder of the Birchenwood Ironworks in 1833 and had inherited a range of industrial concerns, including a number of collieries, and the family bank at Newcastle-under-Lyne from his father Thomas senior. His limeworks supplied lime to farms and estates as far away as Eaton near Congleton. His three kilns were situated at Hardingswood, just below the top lock on the offside.

Spey and Chance 2 burst out of Harecastle Tunnel at Kidsgrove on their way north. Had a great trip through Stoke today although the butty got stuck in Cockshute Lock until we wound in the sides a bit! In the background is the disused original tunnel designed by James Brindley.
