Gulumanhan is one of my favourite places on the Jitong Railway, probably because I always had good experiences when I called at this passing place in a remote area between Lindong and Daban. On this particular day, after spending several hours on the footplate I was deposited here to await my travelling companions who had been off in the van photographing down the line. Just as they reappeared this westbound freight ran straight through in lovely lighting conditions.

The last few months of steam on the Jitong railway saw QJ class locomotives double-heading on the section between Chabuga and Daban. I always liked the semaphore signals at the passing places and particularly those at Gulumanhan, where a heavy westbound train is seen here entering the loops.

QJs 7049 and 6905 close to Gulumanhan with a westbound train on the Jitong railway in China's Mongolian Auntonomous Region. Typical scenery for the central section of this 943 km line.

More memories of the Jitong line with QJ 7049 piloting a freight just west of Gulumanhan. The stars on the smoke deflector are from a short-lived scheme to indicate boiler condition at washout/inspection. With regular crews on each locomotive I suppose it was a matter of pride to display the best possible stars.

Two freight trains cross at the wayside station at Gulumanhan just east of Daban on the Jitong Railway. The plethora of wires and poles is typical of China, even in remote places such as this.

The exhaust hangs in the still air right around the curve as QJ 7038 approaches an accommodation crossing just outside Gulumanhan on the morning of my last day on the Jitong Railway.

I spent a happy day with the crew of this locomotive as it worked along the Jitong railway between Chabuga and Daban. QJ 7081 is seen here after taking water and cleaning the fire at Gulumanhan. The signal had just cleared ready for the final leg of the journey to Daban and the crew are preparing to board. A few months later this became the regular passenger locomotive and at the end of steam on the Jitong line it was then sold to the Iowa Interstate Railroad in the United States where it is still occasionally steamed.

QJ7081 with a very short permanent way train stands in the loops at Gulumanhan on the Jitong railway. This is one of the locomotives now in the United States.

In the last months of steam operation on the Jitong Railway a pair of QJ class locomotives hurry a long freight into the station loops at Gulumanhan between Daban and Lindong.
I am sure that Renown will have a fine video of this train somewhere in his collection. Here is the view from the other end of the loop.
