Draycott tin church

One source suggests that St Augustine's, Draycott in the Clay, Staffordshire, was formed as a mission church in Hanbury parish from 1922. It has been lined out with highly polished wooden wall panels and has full heating. The bell cote was removed a few years ago and has been replaced in wood although the pinnacle and cross seem to be original.

It was built in 1892 at a cost of £150 with the kit probably supplied by Francis Norton & Co., Liverpool. The walls are corrugated iron, lined with pitch pine. The vestry came as an optional extra and has since been extended. The church originally had a small spire which housed a single bell. At a later date the spire was dismantled and the bell was moved to its current turret above the porch.

St Hilda's

This one took a bit of effort to find any information at all. Out walking at the weekend, the rangers at Hollingworth Lake Country Park told me of a tin church not far away. Having found the building there was no nameboard or information of any sort and it was clear that it had been out of use for quite a while. It turns out to be St Hilda's Mission Church, Syke Road, Hollingworth Fold. The church was founded in 1931 which was surprising as the building is clearly older than that. This is because it was originally the first Catholic Church at Featherstall, Littleborough serving St Mary's RC Parish. On completion of a new brick church the old building was sold to Hollingworth through the Mother church at Milnrow, out of the Hill Charity, and was re-erected with structural modifications in 1931.

The first shot in anger from my new wide angle lens. Having been told about this corrugated iron church I had to go for a closer look. St Peter's Church, Lower Withington

St Peter's was built in late 1891 and consecrated in January 1892 by John Frances the Lord Bishop of Chester. The kit was probably supplied by Francis Norton & Co., Liverpool and delivered by rail to Chelford Station from whence it was carted on a wagon with horses by Mr Thomas Capper who was a gardener at Jodrell Hall under Sir Edward and Lady Stockton, who are thought to have given the site for the church. In the 1920’s the vestry was extended and then in 1955-65 there were significant internal alterations including electric heaters to replace the coke boiler and an electric organ to replace the pedal bellows version. The rush seated chairs were replaced by pews and choir stalls from a bombed church in Birkenhead. The oil lamps were replaced with electric lights, leaving one original lamp as a reminder. A new wood block floor replaced the dry rot damaged original. It is now a listed structure and remains in regular use.
