Valve gear operating handles on the 'D' engine at Claymills pumping station. The high pressure cylinder of this Woolf compound beam engine is behind to the right and the low pressure cylinder to the left. The pumping engines were supplied by Gimson & Co of Leicester in 1885.

Shovelling coal into the feed hoppers of the automatic stokers at Claymills pumping station. The blocks on the floor are made from compressed rapeseed waste and are being trialled as an alternative to very expensive coal. Clearly these are unsuitable for the stokers and therefore have to be hand fired. They burn very hot but do not have enough surface area to volume to raise steam as well as coal. If they could be broken down to pieces the same size as the coal used, then maybe they would be a worthwhile substitute.

Final drive gearbox for one of the hybrid CBD90 Bo-Bo locomotives being built in 2020 by Clayton Equipment Ltd at Burton-on-Trent for Tata Steel at Port Talbot. Electric drive is powered by a large bank of lead acid batteries which are charged by a Deutz diesel running in the front compartment. Further ordershave since been gained from Tata Steel and also for two Hybrid+ CBD80 locomotives for Sellafield. A further order has been agreed Beacon Rail Leasing for the supply of 15 more CBD90 locomotives along with options for a period of three years. Each electric loco weighs 90 tonnes and is capable of pulling (or pushing) loads up to 2,500 tonnes.

Back in January 2020 it was great to see new industrial locomotives being built in the UK. This was one of two hybrid CBD90 Bo-Bo locomotives being built by Clayton Equipment Ltd at Burton-on-Trent for Tata Steel at Port Talbot. One other locomotive of this type had already been delivered to Tata. I always find watching a beam engine in action to be a very emotional experience. Yesterday I was able to see two working side by side. Claymills pumping station, Burton-on-Trent. 'C' Engine: Two cylinder condensing Woolf compound rotative beam engine built by Gimsons of Leicester in 1885. Driving two ram pumps and capable of pumping about 3 million gallons of sewage per day through a head of 110ft.

No.4 Boiler

In business for the first time in preservation was the No.4 boiler at the Claymills pumping station. This Lancashire boiler, complete with automatic stoker, proved to be a rather better steamer than No.5 (beyond) which is close to the end of its 10 year ticket. This caused some embarassment for the boilerman as the safety valve lifted and filled the house with steam for a while.
